Psychotherapist Pat Asher

I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor with six years' experience working in BACP Accredited Counselling Services with adult clients.

Therapy

When we are struggling to cope with life, and our problems seem overwhelming, it can feel really difficult to take the step of seeking help and coming to counselling. We may have preconceptions about what counselling is like or about how it might feel to talk to a stranger about our experiences, thoughts and feelings.

The opportunity to have time and space to talk, in the privacy of a confidential session, without fear of being judged, can make a real difference to our lives. My way of working is not to advise or direct you but to be alongside you, so we can think through together what has brought you to this point and what might be the best way forward for you.

As a psychodynamic counsellor, I am trained to help you take note of significant events, people and influences from your earlier life and the impact that these may be having in the present time. My training is also aimed at helping you to be aware of your feelings and the ways in which you express them. We all develop behaviours and ways of coping with life as we go along, and part of our work will be to think about which strategies are most helpful for you at this point of your life.

Talking with a counsellor at an agreed time each week provides continuity and an opportunity to explore your thoughts in depth, and to develop a way of going forward that suits you best. The length of time for which you come to counselling is not fixed at the outset, but is kept open-ended, which means you can discuss and review it with me at any time.
